To celebrate the annual migration of monarch butterflies, the Wildlife Department is hosting monarch roost watches at Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area October 3rd through October 6th.

Meet at the William H. “Bill” Crawford Building for evening roost watch sessions at 6:30 PM. At 7:00 PM we will convoy to a longtime monarch roost site within the management area to watch as the butterflies arrive and settle in for the night. Please bring a collapsible chair.

Disclaimers:

*Registration is required for both the morning and evening events.

*Participants must be 10 years old for all events.

*Registration for each event will close when the participant count reaches 20.

*Minimum of 5 registrants is required for the event.

*No pets allowed.

*The scheduled events will be held regardless of the number of monarchs migrating through Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area.


Please expect an email the day before the event regarding weather conditions and expectations! If weather conditions are looking unfavorable, a cancellation email will be sent out to attendees. We will have a back-up date if needed.


Directions to the William H. "Bill" Crawford Building on Hackberry Flat WMA


To get to the William H. “Bill” Crawford Building, from the south side of Frederick, take U.S. 183 south for one mile, then go east on Airport Road for three miles. Follow the blacktop road south and continue six miles. Watch for signs. (Coordinates for the building are 34.277642, -98.963945)


In Google Maps, type in 'William H. “Bill” Crawford Building' and this will take you directly to the event location. The building was originally listed as 'Hackberry Flats Center,' so please use this name if you cannot locate 'William H. “Bill” Crawford Building' in Google Maps.


Please do not select 'Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area' in Google Maps, as this will take you into the WMA and not to the William H. “Bill” Crawford Building.
